Dog friendly at Flock Cottage 🐾

One of the things we love most about being a dog-friendly self-catering holiday cottage is how much easier it makes bringing the whole family away. Not so long ago, taking your beloved pooch on holiday often wasn't really an option, many hotels didn't accept dogs, and self-catering holidays weren't as widespread as they are today. It’s something we certainly do not take for granted when self catering ourselves, with our own pooches- Hendricks and Chester.

Going away would usually mean packing up their favourite toy, food and blanket before dropping them off with a family member, friend or local kennel and spending the rest of the holiday thinking about them and wondering if they’re okay.

“Did I tell Mum how much food he has? Did she remember he likes a little water on it? Did I tell her about the gravy bone before bed? Because without that, he doesn't actually know it's bedtime.”- You know, all the little quirks and rituals that make them our dogs and the things that can make leaving them behind feel just a little bit harder.

Thankfully, things are wonderfully different now and this doesnt have to be the case anymore and we’re proud to be one of such places that opens our door to responsible dog owners, making it possible to bring the whole family away for a proper adventure.

For us, dog friendly is about providing a clean, comfortable, welcoming place for you to holiday with your dog, while offering thoughtful doggy extras and putting you within easy reach of some of Norfolk's best dog friendly adventures, thus enabling you to head out and explore Norfolk together, because in our opinion Norfolk is a dogs paradise! With its beaches, woodland, countryside, long walks, new smells and plenty of dog friendly spots- there’s so much here for four paws to enjoy.

We do not add an extra charge for furry friends to stay and you’ll find a few thoughtful extras waiting for them when you arrive, including treats, a water bowl, dog towels, poop bags and not to forget, our exclusive discount on beautiful timeless dog accesories, handmade to order, here in Norfolk. Choose from country rope leads, lanyards, bandanas and more.

Because that's our idea of dog friendly.

We have a few simple house rules that keep the cottage welcoming and comfortable for every guest who comes through the door.

What makes North Norfolk perfect for a dog-friendly holiday?

North Norfolk offers miles of sandy coastline, countryside walks, coastal paths, nature reserves and welcoming villages, it’s one of those places where bringing your dog doesn’t feel like an inconvenience, it feels like part of the holiday.

You can enjoy long walks on Old Hunstanton beach, countryside rambles around Ringstead or spend your days exploring the Norfolk Coast Path and discovering dog-friendly pubs along the way, which ever you choose, there is plenty here to for you to enjoy together.

The coastline stretches for around 45 miles, offering iconic sandy beaches, dunes, salt marshes and coastal paths to explore. The area is a recognised for its wildlife and nature reserves, making it ideal for anyone who enjoys walking and getting outdoors for some wildlife spotting.

So we would say the biggest advantage of choosing a dog-friendly cottage in this part of Norfolk is the variety of activities.. In the morning you can be walking along the beach with your dog, and come noon you could be following a section of the Peddars Way or lunching in one of the many eateries .

It’s a holiday that suits dogs who like adventure just as much as their humans.

Hendricks and Chester living their best life on the North Norfolk coast 🐾 With miles of beautiful beaches and countryside to explore together. Flock Cottage in Ringstead is your dog-friendly base for it all.

Why choose a dog-friendly self catering cottage rather than a hotel?

This one is simple. Travelling with your dog doesn't have to mean compromising on your holiday..

A dog-friendly self-catering cottage gives you your own space, your own kitchen and, perhaps most importantly, the freedom to enjoy your days at your own pace.

There is no worrying about other guests sharing your space, no more taking the dog out in your pyjamas to get them to toilet, no feeling cramped in one room and best of all no waking up in time for the hotel breakfast- hit that snooze button! You can head out for a muddy morning walk, come back for a lazy breakfast before heading off for a day of adventuring on your own terms.

For us, that's what makes a dog-friendly cottage feel like a proper holiday, your routine can remain similar to at home, and your dog isn't a hindrance; they're part of the adventure and after a sandy beach walk, you can return to the cottage, settle in together, make a cup of tea and enjoy a slow evening. For us, this is all part of what makes a cottage holiday special, its your holiday, your way.

Another lovely thing about staying with us in Ringstead is having The Gin Trap Inn just a short stroll from Flock Cottage. Our local historic pub welcomes dogs and is a wonderful option when you don’t fancy cooking after a day of trekking the coast.

There is also our village store, The General Store, which makes self-catering particularly easy, dont worry about forgetting something- our village shop stocks everyday essentials alongside fresh and locally sourced produce, with a café on site too, and you guessed it, of course its dog friendly.

Dog-friendly beaches nearby Flock Cottage:

Old Hunstanton Beach

Just a short drive from Flock Cottage, Old Hunstanton beach is one of our favourite places to take the dogs.

Unlike some Norfolk beaches where seasonal restrictions apply, Old Hunstanton is dog-friendly all year round. Its wide sandy beach, shallow tidal waters and dramatic striped cliffs make it a beautiful place for a walk in any season. It’s particularly lovely early in the morning or later in the day when the beach is quieter. Not only this, Hunstanton faces west and the area is known for some spectacular sunsets topping off that evening beach walk.

Holme-next-the-Sea

For another beautiful coastal walk, head towards Holme-next-the-Sea. Here you’ll find a quieter stretch of coastline backed by dunes and salt marsh, making it a wonderful option for a slower-paced walk with your dog. The village is also home to a beautful pub and award winning bakery, both of which are dog friendly.

Brancaster

Brancaster is another favourite for long sandy walks and big Norfolk skies. There are seasonal restrictions in some areas, particularly around protected nesting birds, so always check the latest local guidance before setting off. Beware of spring tide- tides can be higher than average and submerge some of the road.

Holkham

Holkham is hard to beat for a classic North Norfolk beach walk, rated one of the best in the UK it offers you miles of sweeping sand, rolling dunes and pinewoods to explore. It’s a wonderful spot for dogs who love a good run and a paddle, with plenty of space to stretch their legs. Dogs are welcome all year round, although seasonal lead restrictions apply in certain areas during nesting season to help protect ground-nesting birds. Keep an eye out for the signs and enjoy this beautiful stretch of coastline responsibly.

Wells-next-the-Sea

With its colourful beach huts, wide sandy beach and beautiful pinewoods, Wells-next-the-Sea is a lovely place to spend a day by the coast with your dog. There’s plenty of space for a long walk, with woodland paths offering a different route back when you’re ready to leave the sand behind. Dogs are welcome on much of the beach, but there are designated dog-free areas and seasonal measures to protect wildlife, so check the local signs before setting off.

Our advice: Always check current dog restrictions before visiting a beach, alongside it’s TIDE TIMES. Some of Norfolks beaches have seasonal restrictions designed to protect our wonderful wildlife and nesting birds.

Dog-friendly walks around Ringstead

When staying with us you don’t necessarily need to get in the car to enjoy the countryside.

Flock Cottage is located in Ringstead, a peaceful North Norfolk village which is surrounded by countryside and close by to the coast. One of the local highlights is the Ringstead Downs, a beautiful nature reserve and one of Norfolk’s rare dry chalk valleys. It’s a lovely place for a quieter countryside walk and a chance to spot some of the area’s flora and fauna.

Ringstead is also home to Courtyard Farm, which is one of our personal favourite spots for walking the dogs.

The village also provides access to the Peddars Way, making Flock Cottage particularly well suited to guests who enjoy walking holidays.

If you prefer coastal walking, the Norfolk Coast Path gives you the opportunity to explore much further afield, with routes taking in beaches, dunes, marshes and some of North Norfolk’s most beautiful landscapes.

Our village also offers you the AllDogs Meadow Secure Dog field which is a private 3.5 acre paddock that can be hired for your own personal use. It’s perfect for some off lead time especially if you aren’t comfortable allowing your dog off leash some where new, but want them to be able to have a good run and some freedom. Not only that, it is also great for training and agility too, the paddock is equipped with agility equipment such as tunnels, weave poles, tractor tyre sandpit and too top it off there is a picnic bench for the humans and a horsebox shelter for when the weather turns.

A few little things we ask. Just a few little things that keep the cottage welcoming and comfortable for every guest who comes through the door.

Please don't leave your dog unattended in the cottage. If you're heading out to explore, we hope you'll take them with you. Norfolk is full of wonderful places to discover together, so there really is no need for them to miss out.

No doggies allowed on the beds or upstairs. We know that some pups are very good at giving you that look when they want to jump up for a cuddle, but we're afraid the beds and bedrooms are reseerved for the humans! Please utilise the built in stair gates provided and bring their own bed or blanket so they have a cosy spot of their own.

Please clean up after your dog in the garden. A quick tidy-up means the outside space stays enjoyable for everyone including children.

That's it. Nothing complicated, nothing unreasonable. T&C’S
